Other Lyrics

There aren’t a lot of other lyrics that ended up in the archive, but whatever I’ve got goes here. For now, it’s just a few songs we never recorded (or, to the best of my recollection, even performed).

Chewing Corn

(by Myoung-Jae Yi)

Drifting away back home
Finding mercy in the shade
Laid my head into restless hands
See it slide into grey

Sleeping sand, see the sun
Sad and bleeding, red and crazed
Eyes to the sky
Tears falling
Free falling, from the day

And I say to you
There’s nothing more I can do for you

(We never recorded Chewing Corn; I’m not sure what happened to the song, but I don’t remember ever playing it live, or in fact even rehearsing it. I’m not sure why or how it ended up in our lyrics archive, but it was there, so now it’s here too.)

Pangloss

Pangloss’s Apothecary

(by Gord Sellar)

He thinks of stories, of reason and rhyme:
they circle around in his brain.
He sees the wretched faces
returning again and again.

What’s happened to his philosophy?
To the best of all possible worlds?
What’s happened to all his conviction
In the best of all possible worlds?

Some can’t abide the peace of it,
this cultivated land.
The things between what’s thought and seen
can turn your will to sand.

The others have tired of playing the game of
my sorrow’s bigger than yours;
Rascals turned gentlemen, now smile taking tea
with reformed bordello-whores.

What’s happened to his philosophy…
Two capsules a day, morning and night
to take the edge off, he’s told.
There is more light, more brightness, yes,
but also, he fears, less world.

But the rosy haze is back, he smiles,
syphilitic once more and falling apart,
and Pangloss praises in syllogism
his apothecary’s art.
Yes, Pangloss praises in syllogism
his apothecary’s art.

Bodhi-Dharma’s Work Song

(by Gord Sellar)

I’m a-walkin’ down this road,
Where it goes nobody knows. x2
I’m a-walkin’ to the East,
Always famine, never feast. x2

I’m a-preachin’ the Lord of Light,
Try to end the endless night… x2
Buddha, you are everywhere,
Come and help me from this snare. x2

Bridge:
Oh Lord, take me home…
Oh Lord, take me home…
Oh Lord, gone so far, so far…
Oh Lord, take me home…

I’m a-walkin’ down this road,
Where it goes nobody knows. x2
I’m a-walkin’ to the East,
Always famine, never feast. x2

Then the holy one he sighs,
sits up, opens up his eyes. x2
Takes us all inside one hand,
hauls us up to the pure land. x2

I’m a-walkin’ down this road,
Where it goes nobody knows. x2
I’m a-walkin’ to the East,
Always famine, never feast. x2

(See sheet music and some background on the song here.)
